Gas Detection

Gas Detection Units (GDUs) are provided to protect you from the effects of explosive or asphyxiating gas when working in or near the underground external network. These gases can seep into the network at any time and often have no distinct smell.

Tests for gas must be made whenever entrance/access covers are opened in any underground plant for whatever purpose, even if it is not intended to enter an underground structure.

Safety Management System (SMS) & Active Monitoring systems (AMS) checks in BT have identified a number of defects associated with GDUs.

Take a few minutes now to honestly ask yourself the following questions, it could save your life!

  1. Have you been TRAINED in the use of a GDU?
  2. Do you know how to use your GDU?
  3. Do you know WHY you SHOULD USE A GDU?
  4. Do you know when and where you need to use your GDU?
  5. Do you know how to CLEAN and MAINTAIN your GDU?
  6. Is your GDU within calibration date?
  7. Do you know how to ZERO your GDU?
  8. Do you know how to carry out the self-test procedure on your GDU?
  9. Do you know how to read “Peak Readings” on your GDU?
  10. Do you know what the “Peak Reading” means?

If you answered NO to any of the questions, ASK your manager before you consider working in or near the underground external network.

THIS COULD BE THE CONSEQUENCES IF YOU DO NOT GAS TEST.

USE AND LOOK AFTER YOUR GDU AND YOUR GDU WILL LOOK AFTER YOU!
