Allan Eldred was elected unopposed to the vacant position as Assistant Secretary on the Telecoms side of the CWU during the elections in June.
This means that he will no longer be an officer of this branch and will be employed by the Union on a full time basis.
Allan has been an officer of this branch for 20 years since we merged in 1993. Prior to that, he was an officer of the Overseas Telegraphs branch for around 15 years. During that time he lead the line during trade disputes with BT on privatisation and pay.
Allan was a regional officer for London in the 90’s, again tackling BT for the region within Business Services (which became Global Services) and was instrumental in many of the agreements that still exist in that area of the business.
8 years ago Allan was elected to the National Executive Committee. This was during a time where there was significant moves to become on constituency within the Telecoms industry and was heavily involved in making that happen.
This culminated 2 years ago when he was elected Vice-Chair of the new Telecoms constituency.
Allan now joins 2 of our formers officers, Brian Healy and Colin O’Callaghan, as Assistant Secretary’s on the Telecoms side of the CWU, which means he now leaves the branch to become a full time employee of the Union.
That really is the only change that will happen, because he officers of this branch know that Allan will continue in the same manner by which he has for the last 35 years.
He will continue to fight for the members of this union and the rights. He will take his years of experience and knowledge into his new role. Although he does not know what that will be at this stage, this branch knows that he will do it to the best of his ability.
The officers are certain that the members of this branch would like to join us in wishing Allan good luck for the future.
